David was a teen-ager when he was anointed by Samuel to be Israel’s king sometime in the future. David was sent to the battlefield to take food to three of his brothers. They were in Israel’s army under King Saul and they were fighting their enemy, the Philistines.
David heard Goliath’s challenge to Israel’s army: Why are you clothed in battle fatigues? “Am I not the Philistine and you are servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me…”
Goliath was huge! He stood nine feet nine inches tall! He was a strong man, his scale-armor weighed 125 pounds and he carried a spear which weighed 15 pounds. He was well protected by his armor.
This giant challenged Israel’s army every day for forty days
(1 Samuel 17:16). David was probably a teen-ager at this time. David was livid! “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” (1 Samel 17:26)
David was taken to King Saul and the king tried to get him to wear the king’s armor because David was going to fight with Goliath. David tried it, it didn’t fit and besides he hadn’t trained for battle in this way. He told King Saul, I take care of my father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear comes, I kill them.
David took off the armor and used his trusty slingshot. David expected to win against this giant. He was boldly confident that God would help him fight.
Fight to the death… of Goliath. 1 Samuel 17:1-50
David and gloating Goliath meet, and David wins! He kills this giant.
When you have a battle, how do you approach the coming confrontation? With confidence in your skills? Or with confidence in your God, and you expect to win!
