“For I will pour out water on the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring
And My blessing on your descendants.”
NASB Isaiah 44:3
For our bodies to function properly we need water – liquids are, many times, not beneficial for our bodies like clean water is. Each person needs the spiritual water only Jesus gives.
Jesus was going to Galilee from Judea, He was heading north. He didn’t go around Samaria but He passed through it, this was unusual. Most of the time Jews would go out of their way to walk around Samaria. John 4:4
He came to the city of Sychar. He sat down by a well dug many hundreds of years before by Jacob. It was probably in the evening… it was a long day and He was wearied. John 4:6
A woman came to the well, a Samaritan woman. Jesus did something very unusual, He spoke to her, in fact He asked her for a drink of water. She had what was needed to draw water from that deep well, Jesus did not. John 4:7
The surprised woman said to Jesus, “‘How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?’ (Jews had no dealings with Samaritans.)” John 4:9
Jesus said to her, He didn’t mind talking with this Samaritan and a woman at that. “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water!” NASB John 4:10
Jesus took a normal, everyday conversation and turned it into a spiritual conversation.
He took the ordinary need for water and increased her understanding of her need for spiritual living water. The living water that Jesus was talking about gives eternal life, fresh, beneficial and enduring forever.
The surprised woman then said, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?” Her question was logical and practical. John 4:11
Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water I will give him shall never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14
Even at the end of a long and wearisome day, Jesus reached out to a spiritually needy woman of Samaria. He was offering her life for eternity. I wonder, will I meet her in heaven?
~ Take it to heart ~
Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
“He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:37-38
