Life is filled with births and deaths.  God’s unchanging promises are for all who turn to Him in trust.  He is to be leaned on in the joys of births and He is to be leaned on in the sorrows of deaths.

Jacob knew sorrows – his mother’s nurse died and he buried her.  (Genesis 35:5-8)

Jacob went to Bethel because God told him to worship there.  He built an altar and worshiped.  There God gave Jacob the same promises He gave Abraham and Isaac.  God’s promises are unchanging.  He will fulfill all of them. (Genesis 35:9-15)

Jacob knew more sorrows – his beloved Rachel died in childbirth.
Jacob knew the joy of another son – Benjamin.  (Genesis 35:16-21)

Jacob knew anger and sorrow over Reuben’s immorally lying with Jacob’s concubine, Bilhah.  (Genesis 35:22-26)

Jacob and Esau knew the sorrow of burying their father, Isaac.  (Genesis 35:27-29)

Jacob knew sorrows and mourning – he also learned of God’s unchanging promises in the midst of life and death.

You and I also know sorrows and mourning – for the followers of Christ we are to lean our entire weight on the living God and His promises to us.  Tears and sorrow can be therapeutic.  God’s healing touch is for each person – established upon His promises to us.

To whom do the followers of Christ choose to turn?
(NASB) Psalm 121:1-4
“I WILL lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord.
Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Will neither slumber not sleep.”

What else are the followers of Christ to know about the living God?
(NASB) Psalm 121:5-8
“The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 the Lord will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
8 The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time forth and forever.”
