The Lord called Jacob – again – to go to Bethel.  Finally, finally, Jacob obeyed.

(NASB) Genesis 35:1 “THEN GOD said to Jacob, ‘Arise, go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.’”
(Genesis 27:4-45)

Jacob then had his entire household get rid of the idols they had in their tent homes.

You and I also need to do what Jacob did in preparation to obey God.

We are to put away, get rid of and bury idols we worship other than God Himself.

Why?  Why are we to turn from genuflecting and bowing down to statues, icons and images of any kind?

What does God say?
(NASB) Exodus 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
5 ‘You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

Why are we to turn from praying to other gods?  Isn’t God the same in all religions?  What does God of the Holy Bible say about that belief?

(NASB) Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Jacob told his household to bring him all the household idols, anything that was used in worship of false gods and he buried all those things.

He was going to obey God by going to Bethel to live and there to build an altar to the living God.

Why was Jacob going to do this?  Because God told him to and because God had been faithful to him, meeting his needs and answering his distress signal wherever he went. (Genesis 35:1-4)

What is God now convincing you to do in order to obey His word?
