Rebekah’s Response of Courageous Faith
A beautiful, virgin young woman carried a water jar on her shoulder, going to the well to draw water in the late afternoon.
She noticed a caravan of ten camels along with several men. A stranger asked her for a drink of water for himself. How did she respond and reveal positive essential characteristics?
(NASB) Genesis 24:18-20 “She said, ‘Drink, my lord’; and she quickly lowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink.
19 Now when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, ‘I will draw also for your camels until they have finished drinking.’
20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.”
Responding with a servant’s heart to the needs of a stranger and his ten camels… she did not ignore them or have an “attitude” about giving them time and attention. She did not know it but by her words and actions she was an answer to the stranger’s prayer.
How do you respond to various situations that come up throughout your day? Are you gracious and hospitable? Are you attentive to others needs, even when tired? What is your attitude like?
This beautiful young woman was given an expensive gold ring and two gold bracelets for her wrists. She was asked whose daughter she was.
(NASB) Genesis 24:24 “… ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.’’She then invited the stranger to her father’s home for the night… there was plenty of room for the men and the camels.
(Genesis 24:25)She saw the stranger bow low and worship the Lord; she also heard his prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord for the successful journey which had led to her!
Then she ran home and told her brother and mother of her encounter. They welcomed the stranger into their home.
After showing gracious hospitality and providing a meal, the servant of Abraham would not eat until he told them his mission and his charge to bring back a wife for Isaac from Abraham’s family.
Bethuel and Rebekah’s brother, Laban, agreed Rebekah could to go to Canaan with the servant of Abraham. Then a “hitch” was put in the process – she couldn’t leave right away. The servant of Abraham said he had to leave the next day, was she coming or not?
(NASB) Genesis 24:58 “…‘Will you go with this man?’ And she said, ‘I will go.’”
Rebekah’s response to God’s call to become the wife of Isaac revealed her faith in the living God. She was brave, trusting and courageous; her life was changed with her response of faith.
