The Lord God gave Abraham’s descendants land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates River.  (Genesis 15:18)

Yet Abraham owned no land in Canaan; except land used as a family burial ground, purchased from Ephron the Hittite in Canaan near Hebron.

Abraham’s wife, Sarah, died.  This is when Abraham purchased this bit of land with trees and a cave.  (Genesis 23:17-20)

This cave became the family burial site for the patriarchs and their wives.
Abraham and Sarah were buried there.
(Genesis 23:19; 25:9-10)

Isaac and Rebekah were buried there.
(Genesis 35:28-29; 49:29-33)

Jacob-Israel and Leah were buried there.
(Genesis 49:29-33)

Mourning and honoring deceased loved ones is important; however, those who die do not become worthy of worship… only the living God is to be worshiped, not our ancestors… for our ancestors were people like us.  And no one is righteous and worthy of worship… only God the Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
(NASB Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”)

We can learn from Abraham – buy a gravesite (whether for a coffin or a place for a cremation urn).  Life and death are facts.  What do you need to do to prepare for burial?

We are not to be morbid or think about our deaths in an unhealthy manner.

Followers of Christ – our home is not in this world – our future is assured in heaven!

Psalm 49:15
“But God will redeem my life from the grave;
He will surely take me to Himself.”
