Who was Melchizedek?  He suddenly appears on the pages of the Old Testament in the book of Genesis.  He suddenly encounters Abraham, patriarch of the Jewish nation.

Abraham rescued his own nephew Lot from four conquering kings with his own 318 trained militia.  He defeated the conquering four kings and regained Lot and Lot’s possessions.  (Genesis 14:1-16)

When Abraham returned home Melchizedek met him.
(NASB) Genesis 14:18-20 “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High.
19 He blessed him (Abraham) and said,
‘Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.’”

Melchizedek blessed Abraham and Abraham gave the king and high priest a tenth of the spoils of a victorious war.  (Hebrews 7:1-2)

Melchizedek is a “picture” or “type” of Messiah.  His encounter with Abraham is one of the ways God shows us Who Messiah is!

(NASB) Hebrews 7:1-3 “FOR THIS Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.
3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.”

God explains His Messiah, His Anointed One, Jesus the Christ (Messiah) through this man, Melchizedek.  Tomorrow’s devotional will deal with the reasons you and I need Jesus as our Savior, as our King and our High Priest.

The Lord God of the Bible reveals His Son to anyone who will open their minds and hearts to Him.  God’s revelation of Jesus begins with the very first sin in the Garden of Eden…the promise of a Savior.  (Genesis 3)

The Almighty, living God of the Bible recorded His promises and prophecies of His Redeemer, His only begotten Son, Jesus.
And all God’s people say: Amen!
