Paul defended himself before King Agrippa, the Roman governor Festus, the city fathers of Caesarea and his Jewish accusers from Jerusalem.  (Acts 25:23)

Continuing in his defense Paul stated “…Christ had to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He would be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.”  (NASB  Acts 26:23)

(NASB) Acts 26:24 “While Paul was saying this in his defense, Festus said in a loud voice, ‘Paul, you are out of your mind!  Your great learning is driving you mad.’

How did Paul respond to such an outburst from the Roman governor?
(NASB) Acts 26:25-27 “But Paul said, ‘I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I utter words of sober truth.
26 ‘For the king knows about these matters, and I speak to him also with confidence, since I am persuaded that none of these things escape his notice; for this has not been done in a corner.
27 ‘King Agrippa, do you believe the Prophets?  I know that you do.’”

Belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection is the basis of His followers’ faith – which is sober truth.  Followers of Christ, we are to base our thoughts, words and actions on this “sober truth!”  What do you need to change in order to live as a follower of Christ?

All of these events which occurred in Jerusalem many years before happened in the open. Jesus was publically crucified.  Many saw Him after His physical resurrection.

The prophets foretold of Messiah’s suffering and death (Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 are two among other references).  They also foretell His physical resurrection.

How did King Agrippa respond?
(NASB) Acts 26:28 “…‘In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian.’”

Paul’s yearning is shown by his words.  Do you have the same intense desire for others to know Christ?
(NASB) Acts 26:29 “…‘I would wish to God, that whether in a short or long time, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these chains.’”

Paul, the prisoner, was not in spiritual bondage or imprisoned or chained by sin, Satan or death.  He was a free man by faith in Jesus Christ.  Those listening to him were still in the chains of their sins.

Followers of Christ, you are freed from the slavery of sin, Satan and death!  You are no longer a prisoner.   Your chains are gone!

Remember: you are freed by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!  Hallelujah!
