Where Jesus was
Jesus and His twelve disciples were in an upper room, alone.  No servants, no on-lookers, no one else, just those twelve men and Jesus.  They were eating the Passover meal in those hours just before Jesus would be arrested.  The disciples, at least eleven of them, had no clue that anything was about to happen.

(NASB) John 13:2 “During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him (Jesus).”

What Jesus knew
Judas had already made contact with the Jewish religious authorities to betray Jesus.  But Jesus also knew something no one else knew:
(NASB) John 13:3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,”

Jesus knew that He was given all authority from God His Father.
Jesus knew He had come from the Father…
Jesus knew He was going back to God the Father.

What Jesus did
(NASB) John 13:4-5 “got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”

Jesus treated each of His twelve disciples (even Judas Iscariot whom He knew had already contracted to betray Him) equally.
He gave each of those men respect and an example to follow.

As followers of Christ, we also, are to treat others with respect and to serve them with an opportunity to receive Jesus into their lives and hearts.

(NASB) John 13:12-17 “So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you?
13 ‘You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
14 ‘If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 ‘For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
16 ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
17 ‘If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.”

Jesus gave you and me an example to put into action!  We are to be servants of God by serving others.  We are to be servant followers of Christ.  For Jesus Christ has served us.
