Jesus was standing in the treasury of the Temple on that last week of His life.  He was closely observing men and women as they put their gifts of money into the treasury box.

(NASB) Luke 21:1-2 “AND HE looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.
2 And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins.”

  Jesus looked at the gifts of the rich as they contributed to the Temple treasury.  He also saw the poor widow putting in two small copper coins.  What did He observe and say to His disciples?
(NASB) Luke 21:3-4 “…‘Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;
4 for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on.”

  Jesus drew a sharp contrast between the rich and that one lone widow.  Her gift was lavish for it was all she had to live on.
  Think of that!  The percentage is mind boggling.  The rich gave their gifts and the poor widow gave all she had.

  What has Jesus looked at in your life and mine; what has He seen, and most importantly, what would He say about our giving to God?

  Do you give gifts to God out of your surplus or do you give all out of your poverty?

  Poor indeed is the one who has plenty, giving but a small portion out of their surplus to God.

  Rich indeed is the one who has little and gives it all to God.

  As Jesus looks at various areas of our lives, what does He see and what is He saying to us about our motive in giving back to God what He has so generously given to us?

  Giving to God is an example of our true motive of real generosity.
(NIV) 2 Corinthians 8:12 “For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.”
