Anticipation builds as the crowd waits for the star of the show to come center stage.
  How exciting!  A Very Important Person is heralded as he/she comes on stage.  Shouts and clapping, joy and happiness abound.
    If this happens when a music star performs – just imagine what it must have been like as Jesus was riding on a donkey toward Jerusalem.  The fervor of the crowds for what they were desperately hoping for – that Jesus would go into Jerusalem and proclaim Himself King of Israel.

  As the crowds were shouting, “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
  Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”  (NASB Luke 19:38)
  There were Pharisees in that crowd who couldn’t stand the jubilation of Jesus’ followers.  They made it to Jesus’ side and said to Him:
(NASB) Luke 19:39 “…‘Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.’”

  How did Jesus respond to these men?
(NASB) Luke 19:40 “…‘I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!’”

  If you had been a part of those crowds, would you have shouted with joyful anticipation or would you have asked Jesus to rebuke those who were celebrating?

  Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of riding into Jerusalem on a donkey.
(NASB) Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, our king is coming to you;
He is just and endowed with salvation,’
Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

  Jesus was going to Jerusalem to have victory over sin, death and Satan and to establish His eternal kingdom.  Yes the “…the stones would cry out!” if the people had not.
