Jesus sent two of His disciples into the next village to bring back a colt of a donkey.  They found it just as Jesus had told them and had answered the owners, “The Lord has need of it.”  (Luke 19:29-32)

(NASB) Luke 19:35 “They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it.
36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.
37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,
38 shouting:
  “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
    Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

  What a scene is painted for us to “see” as Jesus was riding that donkey along the descending road toward Jerusalem.
  The crowd was made up of men and women who followed Jesus.  They were not silent, but jubilant – this was Messiah!  This was the Son of Man Who had performed many miracles and they had seen the results.
  They shouted out the quote from Psalm 118:26 with joy and expectation of Messiah going into Jerusalem to become their King.

  Although Jesus had told His twelve, repeatedly, that He in the coming days would be maligned, beaten, spit upon, condemned to die and the third day He would rise from that tomb.  His disciples did not understand what He told them over and over again.  They could not comprehend His prophecy about Himself.  (Luke 18:31-33)

  Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 reveal the horrors of the cross and even today many Jewish people do not believe their own Torah and what God’s words says about the first advent of Messiah.

  The disciples of Jesus did not understand that He would die in order to offer life to all who turn to Him in belief.
  It was on the cross where sin, death and Satan would be conquered – by Jesus, the Son of God.  Jesus had to go to Jerusalem, not as the conquering King but the King of peace, riding on a donkey.  He went to Jerusalem to bring peace with God for all who would, and will, turn to Him and receive Him as Savior, Redeemer and Lord.
What Jesus’ Disciples Did Not Understand, they would understand after His resurrection.

  As Easter approaches, what do you understand about what Jesus has done for you?
