Stumbling Block: Resentment/Self-pity
Jesus’ teaching concerning stumbling blocks:
Luke 17:3-4 – Unforgiveness
Luke 17:5-6 – Lack of faith
Luke 17:7-10 – Resentment/Self-pity
(NASB) Luke 17:7-10 “Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down to eat’?
8 ‘But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’?
9 ‘He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he?
10 ‘So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”
When are some of the times you may become resentful and are filled with self-pity or anger?
Is it when others expect you to go ‘the extra mile’?
Is it when others do not thank you and are not grateful for all you do?
What attitude do you have which Jesus said for you to exhibit today?
“So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” (NIV Luke 17:10)
From the many lessons we can learn from this passage of Scripture here are a few to consider:
+ Do what God has called me to do without expectation of being recognized or rewarded…for there will be many times this will be the case.
+ See myself as unworthy to be elevated by others (my expectation should be to hear God say when I enter His presence “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
+ To have the heart of a servant – doing what needs to be done with an attitude that pleases God.
+ A stumbling block can be thrown in your path…by your own attitude!
How can you now effectively pray for yourself and others?
