There was a crowd of thousands around Jesus (Luke 12:1, 13), someone in that crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.”

Think about this: Public airing of family matters reveals way too much information which should be kept private.
What do you say publicly that would be better kept private?

How did Jesus respond to this man?
(NASB) Luke 12:14 “But He said to him, ‘Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?’”

Jesus answered the man but moved the request to a higher level, from what the man wanted…to what God wants.
(NASB) Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?”

Think about this: Jeremiah the prophet defined “justice”: (NASB) Jeremiah 22:3 “Thus says the LORD, ‘Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor.  Also do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place.”
“to love kindness”: is to be loyal to God and toward others
“to walk humbly with your God” is to yield and obey God and His words.
What does God require of you?

Jesus then spoke to that jostling crowd – Be aware, be on guard against every form of greed.  Even the lives of the wealthy, who have great resources, are not to depend on their possessions.  Life is not dependent on what one has!

Think about this: Greed can be of other things besides money, it can be hoarding your time for your pleasure, clothing/shoes; food, etc.
Your life is not to be dependent on what you have or want.
Upon what does your life consist?

Think about this: where are you selfish, greedy?  Greed is selfishness!  When you want your will, your way, you are exhibiting selfishness (translated: exhibiting greed).

Think about this: that man in the crowd who publicly shouted out about private family matters probably had a “victim” mentality.  Is self-pity (a “victim” mentality) a form of greed?  As followers of Christ we are not “victims”, we are to be where God wants us.

Consider this: Jesus was never a “victim” – He was where God the Father had purposed for Him!

Think about this: what do you need to change to be in accord with God’s purposes for you?
