Jesus was talking with a lawyer (an interpreter of the Mosaic Law).  Jesus had just warned a Pharisee of living a lie, of being a hypocrite.  And a lawyer spoke up and said:
(NASB) Luke 11:45 “…‘Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too.’”

“Oops!  He hadn’t oughta said that!”  “Listen” to Jesus’ reply of why He said that:
(NASB) Luke 11:46 “…‘Woe to you lawyers as well!  For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.’”

What was Jesus’ accusation?  Lawyers exempted themselves from burdens they imposed on the majority.

Lawmakers in the capitals of the world, is this what they are doing today?  Making laws, interpreting laws to impose bureaucratic oppression and taxes on the majority of people?  And at the same time exempting themselves from those very laws?
If so – woe to them!
Notice: Jesus did not say, ‘Shame on you,’ He said ‘woe to you!’

Self-examination:  Are you and I guilty of doing that to others?  Do we expect something of others that we are unwilling to do or share in?  Do we exempt ourselves?

(NASB) Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.”

What do you need to stop doing?  Where would Jesus say to you, ‘Woe to you’?
