Imprisoned John the Baptist had a question which only Jesus could answer.  So John sent two of his disciples (followers) to Jesus.
[Do you do that, asking Jesus for an answer to your question(s)?
Then reading the Holy Bible and listening to Biblically-based teaching for the answer(s)?]

(NASB) Luke 7:20 “When the men came to Him (Jesus), they said, ‘John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You’re the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”

John the Baptist had been the one to baptize Jesus, he had seen the Holy Spirit in the bodily form like a dove and had heard a voice from heaven stating ‘You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.’  (Luke 3:22)
John had been the one to announce to the world “…Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

And now he was asking if Jesus was the Expected One?  Depression gives rise to doubts and possible disillusionment.  Imprisoned people can grow in bitterness or depression – especially if they have been wrongfully accused.  John had spoken truth against Herod and had paid the penalty.  Herod did not tolerate truth which exposed his actions to the world.  His actions were there for all to see!  Dictators do that, fearful leaders do that, insecure leaders do that, bullies do that…they work to control what is said about them and their agendas.  And Herod put John the Baptist in prison.

How did Jesus answer this question?  Tomorrow’s devotional will explore Jesus’ reaction to that question…“Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”

Have you ever asked Jesus that question or something like it?  If so, how has Jesus responded to you?  From my own experience, I think Jesus’ love and patience, His kindness and mercy go into His answer so my faith will be grounded and based in Him and His power to work in me and my life…how about you?
