For Jesus, fasting from food was a given in the wilderness.

(KJV) Luke 4:1-2 “AND JESUS being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2Being forty days tempted of the devil.  And in those days he did eat nothing; and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.”

Forty days, what happened during those forty days?  Scripture does not say.  What we do know: Jesus did not eat during that period of time.  Nothing is said about water, however.  Our bodies are made by God to use fluids to live.

Today, those who fast use fruit juices besides water and even some crackers, etc.  Also people may fast from something they enjoy for a period of time, instead of food.
Fasting should be done with your health in mind.  Perhaps your body requires certain medications/foods/etc.  So to fast from foods would be harmful to you.

Fasting can be from food or some other aspect of your life.

For what purpose do you fast?

The Spirit of God had led Him into the wilderness for an extended length of time.
What are some possibilities of Jesus’ purpose to fast while He was in the wilderness?
The one which comes readily to mind is prayer to God and for God’s leading, and not to depend upon physical sustenance.

Jesus had just been baptized, then immediately He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness before He began His public ministry.  Jesus possibly needed that extended period of time alone with God His Father.  He would never have this total isolation and aloneness again during the remaining days of life on earth.

Jesus’ attention would have been on God His Father…no distractions would come into this wilderness time.  Was He lonely?  I think not.  Did He become hungry?  Yes, Scripture says He did.

Loneliness and aloneness with God are two different things.  In the midst of loneliness one can learn to accept (and enjoy) being alone with God.

Perhaps you are in the middle of a wilderness, wondering why in the world you are there!
Have you, or are you, turning to God and accepting, even enjoying, your time with Him in your wilderness?
