Watching and Praying”¦
Jesus asked three disciples to “˜watch and pray”™ while He went a little further, falling on His face to pray in the velvet blackness of night deep in the Garden of Gethsemane. They slept.
(NASB) Matthew 26:40 “And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “˜So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?”™
41 Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
What is Jesus asking you to do today? Watching and praying”¦be alert, observe attentively, to be as a guard standing on watch.
Why is this important? When we are not alert and on guard, we fall into the temptation that snares us, as an animal is snared by carefully laid and hidden traps.
No matter how strong we may be physically, mentally, emotionally, socially or spiritually”¦unless we are continuously on alert, staying awake, we will fall into temptation. Peter, James and John were sleeping when Jesus found them. Jesus had requested their attentiveness and He also recognized their need to be “˜watching and praying”™ for He knew He would be arrested in the next hour.
Those men did not know what was coming”¦you and I do not know what the next few hours will bring into our lives”¦we also need to be “˜watching and praying”™.
Jesus tells us to be “˜Watching and praying”™”¦depending on the Lord God of the Bible for strength to not enter into the coming temptation”¦
