Gift of Myrrh”¦the Suffering Savior
Paul Harvey is known to take newsworthy stories and reveal “˜the rest of the story”™. And so does God”™s word ““ He has revealed the “˜rest of the story”™ of Jesus”™ suffering and physical death and resurrection. He died so that you and I can be given eternal life ““ we have a living Savior”¦there is no other religion which claims this fact.
(NASB) John 19:38-40 “After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.
39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.
40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.”
Notice that myrrh was used in the preparation of the body for burial. Myrrh was one of the gifts that the wise men had brought to the Child Jesus that night long ago in Bethlehem. Myrrh could be symbolizing the suffering of the Savior.
(NASB) Mark 16:9-10 “Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.
10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.”
The grave did not, indeed could not, keep Jesus the Son of God! He is the living God Who suffered, died, was buried and resurrected to physical life. Proof of His resurrection is given ““ He was seen, talked with and ate with many reliable witnesses for forty days. (See 1 Corinthians 15:1-8)
(NASB) Jude 24-25 “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,
25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”
The resurrected Jesus is the hope of all who follow Him. This is why followers of Christ worship Him. He is the living Hope. There is no other greater hope than Jesus.
We have been given the gift of a suffering Savior Who took our sins on Himself”¦no other “˜god”™ or religion has done this.
