Joseph was responsible for all prisoners in the king’s jail. He must have talked with the prisoners on a regular basis.
One day, two men were incarcerated, one of them was the king’s cupbearer and the other was the king’s baker. Both of the men were feeling the king’s anger toward them.
One night – both men had a dream. The next morning Joseph noticed that both men were sad, and asked them why. They both had dreams they didn’t understand. Joseph said he could help interpret their dreams, because dreams belonged to God. Genesis 40:1-8
Cupbearer’s dream
A vine with three branches was budding and blossoming and produced ripe grapes. Pharaoh’s cup was in the man’s hand, “I squeezed grape juice into the cup and put it in the hand of Pharaoh.” Genesis 40:9-11
Joseph’s interpretation
The three branches are three days, Pharaoh will restore you to your position, you will put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand again.
Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him and for Pharaoh to release Joseph from jail.
Genesis 40:12-15
Baker’s dream
The chief baker saw the favorable interpretation of the cupbearer’s dream so he told Joseph his dream.
There were three baskets of white bread on his head baked for Pharaoh. Birds were eating the bread out of the basket on his head. Genesis 40:16-17
Joseph’s interpretation
The three baskets are three days, within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and hang you on a tree and the birds will eat your flesh. Genesis 40:18-19
Day three came, Pharaoh had a party for his servants, he restored the cupbearer to his position and hanged the baker, just as Joseph said. Genesis 40:20-22
Joseph, forgotten by the cupbearer. He was still in jail.
Genesis 40:23
