Joseph arrived in Egypt as a slave. He was sold by Midianite traders to Potiphar, the king. We are not told how long he was a slave in the household of Potiphar before he was put in charge of Potiphar’s household and all he owned. Genesis 37:18-28, 36
Potiphar’s wife saw Joseph and wanted him to take her to bed. How did Joseph respond? “No, it is a great evil in the sight against God.” She kept after him day after day.
Genesis 39:1, 6-9
One day, no one was in the house except the wife and Joseph. She saw her chance and took it. She again approached Joseph and again he said, “no” but this time, he ran out of the house because there were no witnesses. The wife waited until her husband came home and told him Joseph tried to lie with her, but she screamed. No one heard her, and Joseph ran away. Potiphar was angry! Genesis 39:11-19
Potiphar had Joseph put into jail, the king’s jail.
There in jail, Joseph became a favorite and was trusted by the chief jailer. Genesis 39:20-23
No matter if you are enslaved, you can still keep God’s words.
No matter if you are in jail for a crime you did not commit, you can still keep God’s words.
The chief jailer extended kindness to Joseph and gave him responsibility over all the prisoners. The Lord was with Joseph in that prison. Genesis 39:23
Joseph grew up in harsh circumstances by being enslaved and then put in jail.
Joseph had learned at home how to organize and be responsible. Joseph was used by God in a foreign land (Egypt) as a slave and later as a prisoner in a jail.
