Interventions – are designed to help people out of difficult circumstances or thought patterns. When people intervene, does it work? Sometimes. But I do know that when God intervenes, it always works according to His plan!
Genesis 20:1-18
Abraham took his wife, Sarah, along with his servants and all the livestock he owned and traveled to Egypt and settled in the Negev, a wilderness area.
Abraham feared for his life early on, because he might be killed by kings if they knew Sarah was his wife. He convinced Sarah to go along with the story.
What was the story? Abraham told the king of Gerar that Sarah was his sister.
The king took Sarah into his harem. And God intervened on His own behalf. He had plans which did not include Sarah having a child by any man but her husband.
God visited the king in a dream, and told him, ‘You are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is married.’ Genesis 20:3
The king had not come near her and he asked a valid question of God, ‘Lord, will you slay a nation, even though blameless? Besides, he told me she was his sister. And she said, he is my brother. I am without guilt in all this. I am innocent in this.’
God replied, yes, I know you are innocent and I kept you from sinning against Me, that is why I did not let you touch her. Give her back to Abraham as his wife. He will pray for you because he is a prophet and you will live. If you don’t give her back you and all who are in your family will die. There would be no continuing of the lineage of kings in Gerar through the king’s bloodline.
The next day the king told his people what God said to him and he confronted Abraham, ‘What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you brought on me and my kingdom such a great sin? You have done what you should not have done.’ Genesis 20:8-9
Abraham admitted he was afraid he would be killed for Sarah. Then he said, Sarah is actually my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother. She became my wife. When God called us to leave Ur, I asked her to say she was my sister wherever we go. Genesis 20:11-13 Lies are intentionally misleading.
Because of God’s intervention, the king avoided sin, saved his family and returned Sarah back to Abraham. Genesis 20:14
