Who do you “go to bat for” when you know they are in trouble?  Abraham knew his nephew Lot lived in Sodom.  And he also knew that the LORD was the Judge of all the earth.  Would the LORD judge Sodom for the sake of ten righteous people?

Three strangers stopped by Abraham’s tent and were invited to stay for a mid-day meal.  After enjoying the hospitality of Abraham and Sarah, the men looked toward Sodom.  Abraham walked with them for a distance.

One of the strangers was the LORD, and He said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do; since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?”  Genesis 18:17-18

The LORD told Abraham His intentions for Sodom and Gomorrah.  The sin of those cities was really great and grave indeed.  The LORD was going to judge those people for their sins.  Sin is a serious business with the LORD.

Too many times we laugh at sin.  The LORD does not laugh at sin.  For sin is against Him, always.

Two of the men continued walking to Sodom and Gomorrah.
The LORD and Abraham stopped and talked together.  The LORD told Abraham what He was about to do.

Listen to Abraham’s intercession for those people.
Abraham:  Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?  Suppose there are 50 righteous within Sodom, will You not spare Sodom for the sake of 50?
Abraham did not believe God would kill, or slay, the righteous with the wicked.  He also knew that God was the righteous Judge.  He knew that he was speaking with the Judge, right at that moment.

The LORD: If I find 50 righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for the sake of the 50.
Abraham considered and boldly continued to ask the LORD about five less until it got down to ten.  And the LORD agreed to not judge Sodom for the sake of ten righteous people.
Abraham went back to his tent and the LORD departed.

“And the heavens declare His righteousness,
For God Himself is judge.”
