Friend or Foe? Watch out for red flags!
1 Chronicles 12:16-18
Some of the sons from the tribe of Benjamin… King Saul was from this same tribe. These men were potential enemies, and they came to where David was hiding out from King Saul.
David went out to meet these men with logic and realistic questions. ‘If you come peacefully to help me; my heart shall be united with you; but if you betray me to my adversaries (meaning King Saul), since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look on it and decide.’
Even with potential enemies – David put himself in his God’s hands, David was yielded to God with a realistic understanding of potential enemies or friends.
The Holy Spirit of God came upon Amasai, a leader of 30 men and he said,
1 Chronicles 12:18
“We are yours, O David,
And with you, O son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
And peace to him who helps you;
Indeed, your God helps you.”
Then, only then, did David accept these men. He also made them captains of his followers.
David’s heart motive was to accept God’s provision of men to help him in the wilderness. He did not leap to conclusions – good or bad about these men who were potential enemies.
Friends? or Foes? that is what David needed to discern. God led him in his decision.
Consider this ~
How careful are you to discern your true friends?
How careful are you to discern your true foes?
