Day of Pentecost ~ Filled with the Holy Spirit
One hundred twenty men and women were gathered in one house to pray as they waited for God to work.
Suddenly, they heard a noise, a noise that was in the whole house where they were. That noise was like a violent, rushing wind yet they did not feel any wind…they only heard it.
And on each of them they saw tongues of fire…they felt no heat; they were not burned.
And those men and women were given another proof of God’s power.
(NASB) Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.”
Those present in that house believed in Jesus as their Savior, their Redeemer and as their Lord. All of them were given God the Holy Spirit.
They had gathered to pray. For what had they been praying? This writer believes they were praying for the power of the Holy Spirit because Jesus had told His apostles that they would “receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8).
What else had Jesus said?
(NASB) Acts 1:8 “…and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
(NASB) Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.”
God chose those 120 men and women to be His witnesses – beginning in Jerusalem. They would be effective witnesses by speaking the various languages of those present in Jerusalem at that time. Men and women who had come to Jerusalem from other nations to worship God would be reached with the Good News of Jesus.
What language(s) do you speak? No matter what language(s) you speak, the living God can use that language to speak of His love, His sacrifice, His grace, His plan and purposes through the Lord Jesus Christ to others who can hear in their language.
How do you speak to others of Christ? [First begin] With love for that person.
Your love for God and His word and your love for others ~ will show. God the Holy Spirit will use you for God’s purposes where God has you today.
Your attitude toward God and His word, [follower of Christ,] your attitude toward others will open…or shut…doors to Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit of God fills God’s people with power to be witnesses in their home, their town, their state, their country “and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
