Disappointment is rampant during the Coronavirus shut down.  Not just in one country, but around the world.  As a natural human response, we tend to focus inward, trying to make it through the day.  Many people cancelled travel plans. high school graduations and college commencements were indefinitely postponed or cancelled.  Some could not be with their loved ones in the hospital.  Weddings and funerals were done with only a few family members in attendance.  It truly hurts and disappoints to miss what could be the biggest moments of our lives.

The book of Numbers tells Balaam’s story.  Balaam was self-focused.  He wanted the money the king of Moab offered to him to curse the Israelites.  When his donkey refused to move forward, Balaam beat him…three times.  Numbers 22

Numbers 22:28-30 (NIV) “Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, ‘What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?’  Balaam answered the donkey, ‘You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.’  The donkey said to Balaam, ‘Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?’  ‘No,’ he said.”

Balaam realized his donkey was acting funny because he admitted to the donkey that it was out of character for the donkey to be so stubborn. Do you wonder if Balaam found it odd that he was having a conversation with a donkey?

We find ourselves in circumstances out of our control.  Are we so self-focused that we are missing the tell-tale signs of God at work around us?  Are we missing His blessings because we can’t see beyond the “here and now”?

Take a look around you.  Look for the miracles.  In the small things.  Donkeys may not talk but God is still at work.
