Faithful, loyal followers
Disciples are followers… of somebody or something.
John, the man who baptized Jesus, had disciples. Men who listened to him, were taught by him and who were ready to help him.
To whom are you listening? By whom are you being taught? Who are you helping?
Helpers or disciples are aware of what is going on in the world. John’s disciples were telling him what they were observing and hearing about Jesus. (Luke 7:11-18)
John chose two of his disciples to ask Jesus a pointed question: “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”
The Expected One, the Anointed One of God, the Messiah. Was Jesus this Expected One?
When Jesus was asked this question, He did not respond with a verbal ‘yes.’ BUT He did prove Himself to be Messiah, the Expected One by His actions.
He cured many diseases, afflictions and evil spirits. He gave the blind, sight. The lame walked, lepers were cleansed and He restored hearing to the deaf. He raised up the dead to life. He preached the gospel to those who were poor. Luke 7:19-23
Then Jesus said to those two men, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard.”
John was encouraged by those reports. He wanted to be a discerning and wise leader who led others to the living God.
Does the person you are following, follow the Lord Jesus Christ? Do your ideals align with God’s words in the Bible? Do the people and your ideals point to the inerrant, infallible and eternal word of God?
Being faithful is one thing, following blindly from habit or tradition is never a good thing.
Evaluate who you are listening to, and being taught by – are their lives and words pointing to the truths God gives in His word, the Holy Bible? Is it time to evaluate your motivation and words when you are helping others? Do you point to the truths God gives in His word?
~ Take it to heart ~
Be alert… know whom you are following.
