There are commercials about putting on a mask to appear happy when in reality your mind and emotions are caught in the dark place of depression.

Follower of Christ: follow the example of David.  David was on the run from King Saul and hiding in a cave in the Ein Gedi region of Israel.  David was depressed.  How can I say this?  “Listen” to what he wrote.

“When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
You knew my path.
In the way I walk
They have hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see;
For there is no one who regards me;
There is no escape for me;
No one cares for my soul.”
(NASB) Psalm 142:3-4

David described his depression.
His spirit was overwhelmed within him.

David clung to his faith in the living God.
The LORD knew what was happening to him.

David honestly assessed his situation.
Saul set a trap to catch him.

David’s realization.
He had no one!  No one to really help him.  The four hundred men with him were following him.  He was their leader.  Leaders are lonely people!
David had no escape from being pursued by Saul.
He had no one who really cared for his mind, his emotions, his will – his soul.

Depression is a dark place to be – and one’s thoughts and emotions may not “see” reality.

Even in the desperation of depression – follow David’s example: cry out to the living God.
He listens!  He cares for you!  He loves you!

Do you find yourself in a dark place?  You think you have no one.

God is greater than your depression.

~ Take it to heart ~

Before you read tomorrow’s devotion, Read all of Psalm 142, and think about how David’s faith begins the Psalm by voicing his complaint to God then ends with giving thanks to God for what He will do.
