Jesus Knew
Have you ever been in a position when you just wanted to get something over with? That time would pass quickly so it could just be done? Have you had that kind of anticipation that knots your stomach and brings tears? And, you were all alone. Yet you knew it had to be done.
Messiah foreknew His death and resurrection
Jesus knew. He knew what had to be done to gain salvation for us. He knew He would be betrayed. He knew how he would suffer. He knew how He would die.
Jesus knew He was to be crucified…soon. In the Garden…
Jesus asked his disciples to stay awake and pray with Him while He separated Himself to pray. But they fell asleep… in His greatest hour of need for prayer… Jesus was alone.
(NIV) Matthew 26:37-38 “He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
(NIV) Matthew 26:39 “Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will’.” The disciples were still asleep. Jesus was still alone.
(NIV) Matthew 26:42 “He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”
Then, Jesus, while the disciples were still asleep, prayed a third time and accepted what had to be done. It wasn’t without agony. It wasn’t without tears of blood. But it was with purpose and conviction of knowing without a doubt He was accomplishing what God ordained for Him to do. Even though He felt alone.
YET He submitted to His Father’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane. Matthew 26:36-46
~Take it to Heart~
We can’t avoid the agony.
We can struggle with the taking of the cup God has for us.
But, we can KNOW that God is accomplishing His purpose in us and through us when we accept His will.
