“Honor your parents”
According to a dictionary – “honor” is to hold in high respect.
It is our choice to honor our parents. Honoring, giving respect is a choice we make… because of who our parents are – they gave us life.
Good or bad parenting should not be the criteria by which we give respect or honor to our parents.
Honoring our parents does not mean we worship or venerate them. Ancestor worship is far different from the fifth commandment given to us by God.
When we honor our parents we are to be kind and give them respect – no matter how they have treated us.
Does this mean we are to allow them to abuse us? NO!
But as followers of Christ we are to forgive and move on.
Do not let yourself be caught in the prison of unforgiveness.
When we are unforgiving – toward anyone – we are being controlled by them.
Refusing to forgive is like drinking poison; but expecting the other person to die.
Unforgiveness – consciously confessed to the living God – is freedom!
(NASB) 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”For those whose parents were far from perfect:
Freedom to forgive – we can then give due respect to those who hurt us.
Forgiveness – even extended to those who have died gives you freedom! For those whose parents were great examples to follow:
Freedom to give back love to those who have loved us!
Freedom to love our parents whose love is without price.
