A guilty conscience says… “what if.”
Fear says… “what if.”
Regrets say… “what if.”

People have regrets, fear, and many times a guilty conscience from actions done years ago or even a short time ago.  Ten brothers of Joseph had the “… what if’s …” in their conversation.

Looking back many years…in the land of Canaan.
What caused their fear, guilty conscience and regrets?  Years before they had thrown Joseph into a dry pit and paid no attention to his cries and pleading.  A caravan going to Egypt passed by and the ten brothers saw this as an answer to their problem.  They wouldn’t have to kill Joseph, they could sell him as a slave… and that is what they did.

Fast forward to Egypt after the death of their father, Jacob.
(NASB) Genesis 50:15 “When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, ‘What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!’”  (Underlining added)

Consequences of past actions were quite possible in the case of the ten brothers.  Joseph had a position of great power and authority in Egypt.  They were realistic in their fear.

However, they forgot the most important aspect… Joseph’s faith in the living God.  His faith was a reality in his life.

Many times the “what if’s” in life do not trust God.  Ten brothers had the “what if’s” of regret, a guilty conscience and fear… are the choices you are making today going to give you fear and regrets in the years ahead?

Or are you choosing to live life as Joseph did, forgiving and living your faith in the Lord Jesus 24/7?
