Motherhood is much like a bear with cubs.  No one dares come between a mama bear and her cubs.

In the case of Rebekah, her favorite son Jacob was to be protected at all costs.  And it cost her dearly.  Because of her participation in the deception of her husband, she never saw her favorite son again.

Esau’s threat was real; he wanted to kill his brother Jacob.  He wanted to take revenge against Jacob for deceiving their father and receiving the blessing.  (Genesis 27:30-41)

  Rebekah loved her twin sons; however, her love for Jacob exceeded her love for Esau.

(NASB) Genesis 27:42-45 “Now when the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, ‘Behold your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you.
43 ‘Now therefore, my son, obey my voice, and arise, flee to Haran, to my brother Laban!
44 ‘Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury subsides,
45 until your brother’s anger against you subsides and he forgets what you did to him.  Then I will send and get you from there.  Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?’”

~ Take it to heart ~

There is always a cost involved when unfairly loving one person more than another.  It hurts; it hurts and maims relationships within families and can be devastating within the church family.

We need God’s wisdom in showing love to others.

(NASB) 1 John 4:7
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God;
and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”

(NASB) 1 John 4:19
“We love, because He first loved us.”
