Jacob and his mother Rebekah went to great lengths to deceive dim-sighted Isaac so he would bless Jacob with the blessings of God.  Isaac doubted which son he was blessing.  He wanted to bless Esau, the eldest – yet Isaac blessed Jacob.

Jacob took Isaac a favorite meal, dressed in his brother’s clothes, put goat skin on his hands and arms and neck to impersonate his hairy brother Esau.  He lied to his father when asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” (Genesis 27:14-27)

Jacob received the blessing and quickly left his father.  The deed was done.

Jacob sinned.  He sinned against God; he sinned against his father Isaac and his brother Esau.

He knowingly sinned.  He willfully sinned.

How would the living God have given him this coveted blessing – we don’t know.

Did Jacob know God at the point in his life?  It would not seem so.  He knew about God but he didn’t know God.  This devotional will continue to consider Jacob and his relationship with God in the weeks ahead.

This same God desires us to know Him for ourselves.

Our guilt can be a means to turn us to the Lord God as our Savior and turn us from our sins.

We cry out to Him for forgiveness and He hears and takes away our sins.

Did God let Rebekah and Jacob get away with their deception of Isaac?  No, both paid a price, a high price.  Neither saw the other again in this life.

~ Take it to heart ~

What do you need to do today?  Is there a sin, you have committed or omitted, which you know you need to tell God?

What does God say?
(NASB) 1 John 1:8-10 “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”

Turn from the sin of deception…
