The Urgency of the Moment
Followers of Christ – we begin strong in faith in the living God – we may go for years depending on God for our needs.
Then — a good “thing” comes and we know God wants that one “thing” for us. So, many times, we willfully manipulate circumstances and people to get that one “thing”. We rationalize, we “reason out” – God wants that for us! People and circumstances are not doing what we think needs to be done. Waiting on God to work out the details? No time to do that! The urgency of the moment demands we act – Now! This is what Rebekah did.
(NASB) Genesis 27:5-10 “Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home,
6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, ‘Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying,
7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’
8 ‘Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you.
9 ‘Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves.
10 ‘Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.’”
Rebekah thought she was in an urgent position. She felt the urgency to act quickly, decisively. She did not seek the Lord in prayer for His will. She did not confront Isaac and his willful desire to give Esau the blessing which was to go to Jacob.
God’s word tells what happened. He does not try to sugar coat people and their choices. Realistically, no one living gets it right every time.
Isaac and Rebekah made a mess of God’s will for their sons. Both did not turn to God in prayer, both did not trust the other to put aside their “favorite” son for God’s will to be done.
Isaac wanted his favorite son Esau to receive God’s best. Rebekah knew that Jacob was to receive that blessing. God had said so when she was carrying the twins in her womb. The younger would be stronger than the first born. The older would serve the younger. (Genesis 25:23)
Isaac and Rebekah did not wait on the Lord to work out the details – they didn’t think they had time, the urgency of the moment demanded action – right then! Are we like that? The urgency of the moment acts and does not wait for God’s perfect timing.
Plans without the Lord God can lead to severed relationships – anger – revenge – fear.
Both parents wanted the best for their favorite sons – they connived against each other and their sons were involved. All wanted the best blessing of God. But none of them, parents nor sons, turned to God. They did not wait on the Lord.

(NASB) Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.”
