Godly Jealousy
Some dictionary definitions for the word “jealousy”:
Resentful or bitter in rivalry; envious.
Concerning or arising from feelings of envy, apprehension, or bitterness.
This type of jealousy is mentioned by God in
(NASB) 1 Corinthians 13:4
“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous…”
The dictionary also defines “jealousy” as intolerant of disloyalty, or infidelity – a Jealous God.
Godly jealousy is against idols and the worship of false gods.
Yet, God shows His mercy and faithful love to thousands – to those who love Him and do what He commands.
(NASB) Exodus 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”
We are to worship the one, true living God and Him alone. No other gods or god is to receive offerings or attention or worship. In the Old Testament God says that He is a Jealous God and that has not changed!
(NASB) Exodus 34:14 “ – for you shall not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”
Godly jealousy is being focused on the Triune God – Three Persons, yet One God.
God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit – yet one God!Followers of Christ – we are purified by faith in the Lord Jesus, God the Son. It is His blood given as a perfect sacrifice on the cross by which we are forgiven. Have you received His forgiveness? Have you asked Jesus to be your Savior from your sins? Who do you know who needs to hear this Good News? Forgiven – forever! Faith in Jesus is the requirement of God.

(NASB) 2 Corinthians 11:2 “For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy… ”
We can be jealous for others with a godly jealousy – we can be zealous with a godly eagerness for others to have faith in Jesus.
