God gives a warning to those who believe in His Son.   We are not to be bound together with unbelievers; we are not to be unequally yoked.

Why is this?  Aren’t we to reach out to those without Christ as their Savior?  Yes, a thousand times yes.

The following gives God’s Reason of Why followers of Christ are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.
(NASB) 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Do not be bound together with unbelievers… ”
(NIV) 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers… ”

We need to make a distinction between being acquaintances with unbelievers and having alliances with them.  We are not to be bound with unbelievers; we are not to be in partnership with them.

Unbelievers do not have faith in Christ as their foundation.  And that will always have a bearing on decisions.

(NASB) 2 Corinthians 6:14 “… for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness… ”

Partnerships made with unbelievers cannot withstand the need to live in right standing with God.  Iniquity and lawlessness cannot live side by side with righteous living and thinking.

(NASB) 2 Corinthians 6:14 “… or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

One illustration of being unequally yoked: light cannot occupy the same place as darkness.  Either there is light, or there is darkness.  Light = belief   Darkness = unbelief

(NASB) 2 Corinthians 6:15 “Or what harmony has Christ with Belial… ”
Consider another aspect of being believers unequally yoked with unbelievers.

There can be no harmony between Christ and Belial (the devil).  The devil is at war with Christ.  There is no harmony between opposing forces in war.  Christ has no harmony with Satan (the devil).

Summation of God’s Reasons of Why
God gives the reasons why followers of Christ are not to enter into partnership or any kind of alliance with those without Christ.

        1. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers
        2. Righteousness and lawlessness cannot have a partnership, they have nothing in common
        3. Light and darkness cannot occupy the same place
        4. There is no harmony between Christ Jesus and the devil – none!
        5. Followers of Christ have beliefs that do not have common ground with unbelief.

~ Take it to heart ~

I am a follower of Christ – and I need to be aware of God’s boundaries, of His reasons why.

I do not have common ground with unbelievers.

I do have confidence in God my Savior… His name is Jesus.
