Many Christian denominations do not have priests today.  Some do.  The important point is – those who lead denominations and churches and congregations – are to be called and appointed by God.  God’s call…God’s appointment…for leaders is crucial.

People in leadership positions are not to be self-appointed.  They are not to depend on others to promote them to positions of leadership without the guidance and direction of God the Holy Spirit.

What does God have to say?
(NASB) Hebrews 5:1-4 “FOR EVERY high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins;
2 he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness;
3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself.
4 And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.”

Aaron was the first high priest appointed and called by God under the Mosaic Law. (Exodus 28:1; Hebrews 5:1)
Aaron’s role as high priest included offering both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

All of us sin…not one person is without sin.  The only Man who never sinned was Jesus, the Son of Man who is the Son of God.  (Hebrews 5:2; Romans 3:23)

(NASB) Psalm 143:1-2 “HEAR MY prayer, O Lord, Give ear to my supplications!
Answer me in Your faithfulness, in Your righteousness!
2 And do not enter into judgment with Your servant.
For in Your sight no man living is righteous.”

Aaron was not appointed by Moses, nor did he take the office of high priest for himself…he was called by God to fulfill the role as high priest for the Hebrew people.

What was one of Aaron’s duties?  He was obligated to offer sacrifices for sins – for the people’s sins and for his own sins.  (Hebrews 5:3)

Followers of Christ are to recognize that our leaders need prayer – for all people sin.  All!

As a follower of Christ, one of our greatest services is to support our leaders with prayer.  They are men and women who are responsible and accountable before the living God for those whom they serve…that’s you and me.

When was the last time you prayed for your Pastor and staff?
