Apollos was a powerful speaker proving from Scripture Jesus Christ was indeed the Messiah.  While he was at Corinth, Paul was traveling in Asia.

These two Jewish men were called by God to tell others of the Lord Jesus.  They did not travel together…but they did travel according to God’s timetable for them.  (Acts 19:1)

Paul went to Ephesus and found some disciples who believed.  (Acts 19:1)
(NASB) Acts 19:2 “He (Paul) said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?’  And they said to him, ‘No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.’
3 And he said, ‘Into what then were you baptized?’  And they said, ‘Into John’s baptism.’
4 Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.’”

John the Baptist had told people who came to him to receive the baptism of repentance.  John told of One who was coming (Messiah) Who was mightier than himself.

In fact, Jesus was so much mightier John did not feel qualified to remove His sandals.  John stated as a fact that when the Messiah would come, He would baptize believers with the Holy Spirit and fire.  (Matthew 3:11)

Paul did not assume or jump to conclusions about the men and their belief.  He asked logical, forthright questions without accusing or condemning them.

Paul established what was known and what was not known by those men.  The impression is that his body language, his tone of voice and his facial expression invited these men to continue the conversation without building barriers or defenses.

As followers of Christ, we can learn about approaching others and learning about their beliefs from Paul’s example.  He cared about people and he wanted them to know Jesus.

We can think through how to ask open-ended questions which lead to discussions.

We can learn not to assume to know the answers before another speaks.

We can be sincerely interested in another; showing our true concern.

Do we listen and then walk away?  Or do we watch with our eyes, listen with our ears, and quietly listen?

Remember – your body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions are important.

Paul asked questions leading to belief for about 12 men.  As a result, these men were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  When Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on each one of them and they began speaking in foreign unknown languages.  They also prophesied.  God was at work.  (Acts 19:5-7)

God is at work today.  Just think, you and I can be a part of the process that leads others to faith in the Lord Jesus.  It is His work, it is His Holy Spirit given to all followers of Christ.

We also can ask others open-ended questions leading to belief.
