Pilate sent Jesus to Herod – the king.  And Herod?  He was a man of limited power for Rome was in charge, yet a man of importance.  See how Herod interrogates Jesus.

(NASB) Luke 23:8 “Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him.”

  Herod wanted to see Jesus “perform” as if performing some magic act.
  What Herod didn’t seem to realize was that Jesus was not a magician – He was the Son of God.
  Jesus was not a performing artist for Herod’s entertainment – He was Messiah, the Anointed One of God.
  How did Jesus handle this situation?
(NASB) Luke 23:9 “And he (Herod) questioned Him (Jesus) at some length; but He answered him nothing.”

  Jesus responded to Herod by saying…nothing.  No matter the questions thrown at Him; no matter what contempt, what mockery was hurled at Jesus; no matter how He was treated…He said nothing!  And Scripture was again fulfilled.
(NASB) Isaiah 53:7 “He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,’
So He did not open His mouth.”

  Present at this ‘trial’ before Herod were the chief priests and scribes – violently, vehemently accusing Jesus.  Consider Jesus, He had endured beating before He stood before Herod by these Jewish leaders.  Cuts and bruises were probably causing pain and discoloring His face, His body.  (Luke 23:10)
  Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mockery.  Then after Jesus had been ridiculed, He was sent back to Pilate dressed in a robe of beauty and elegance.  All of this and Jesus said…nothing!

  Herod had wanted a ‘performance’ for he had no desire to acknowledge God the Son.
  When you pray, what do you expect?  A performing Jesus for your entertainment or benefit?

  As we pray, what do we need to remember?  “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”  (NASB Acts 4:12)

  We are to reverence Jesus.  We are to bow before Him for He is God the Son.  We are to worship Him with great respect and awe…for He came to save people like Herod, you and me.  Herod apparently did not believe Jesus for Who He was (and is).  Do you?
