Jesus and His disciples were reclining around the Passover meal.  A dispute was under way about which one of the disciples were regarded as the greatest.

Jesus drew a comparison for them:
(NASB) Luke 22:25-27 “…‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’
26 ‘But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
27 ‘For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves?  Is it not the one who reclines at the table?  But I am among you as the one who serves.”

Followers of Christ – to be “the greatest” we must become teachable and willing to learn from others.
To be a leader, we must be a servant to those we lead.

Jesus gave the illustration of a person sitting at a table to eat and the one who is waiting on that person (to bring them food).  Who is greater?  Why, the one waiting to eat.
Then Jesus said what I believe is to be true of us also: “But I am among you as the one who serves.”

Jesus had bragging rights – He is the Son of God.  Yet, He came to serve you and me so our needs would be met.  We need Jesus to intervene and intercede for us before Almighty God.

What are we to consciously remember as a follower of Christ?
We are to follow Jesus; we are to copy His example to us.
We are to care for others by serving them.
We are to lead by approaching that position of leadership as a servant.  We are to serve those we lead.
No grousing, no complaining, no expecting to get the “perks” that the world gives to leaders.  No bragging rights as we serve our God.

How are we to lead?  With a cheerful face and with a thankful attitude as we serve God by serving others.  Come with a teachable attitude!  Come with a willingness to learn from others!  Come, let us serve others!
