Jesus was asked a question from the group that did not believe in the resurrection.  The question was meant to trap Jesus so He would be found guilty and taken to the Roman Governor Pilate.  They gave a word picture of a woman (who remained childless through seven marriages to seven brothers) who died.

  The Question of the Sadducees:
(NIV) Luke 20:33 “Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

  The Answer of Jesus:
(NIV) Luke 20:34-38 “Jesus replied, ‘The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.  35But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels.  They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.  37But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’  38He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

Some may ask; who were Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?  They are the patriarchs of the Jewish nation.  Jesus pointed to these men, long dead physically as being alive in heaven at that moment in time.  Ladies and gentlemen, those same men are alive today, in heaven.  I have a question for you, will you one day meet them?  I plan on it.

Jesus’ reply to the Sadducees pointed out their wrong thinking concerning the resurrection.  Our God is the God of the living.  Easter is proof!

  The Response:
(NIV) Luke 20:39 “Some of the teachers of the law responded, ‘Well said, teacher!’  40And no one dared to ask him any more questions.”

Christians have been called Easter people for we are the people who have joy in knowing that we too will be resurrected to life anew.  How about you?
