(NASB) Luke 18:9 “And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:”

What does this one verse tell us about self-righteous people?
Self-righteous people trust in themselves.
Self-righteous people think of themselves as righteous.
Self-righteous people view others with contempt.
Self-righteous people exalt themselves.

Tomorrow’s devotional will reveal that self-righteous people will be humbled.

  How do you “see” yourself?
Do you trust in yourself or in God?
Do you “see” yourself as righteous or do you see yourself as the sinner in need of God’s mercy?  (Tomorrow’s devotional will give the parable Jesus told.)

How do you view other people?
Do you look “down your nose” at others?
Do you disdain and view others with contempt?
Do you consider yourself “above” others in any way?
Do you demean others with a look, with words, with dismissal?
Do you exalt yourself – to make yourself look better than others?

For what do we need to watch?
Being humiliated by our own attitudes.
Our high esteem of ourselves will only cause us to stumble and fall.
Our God’s word says: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
(Romans 3:23)

Self-righteous people are not righteous in God’s sight.
