Lament Over Jerusalem ~ God’s Enduring Knowledge
The LORD God’s Knowledge:
(NASB) Luke 13:34-35 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!
35 “Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.”
History: Israel was without a king on the throne from the lineage of David. King Zedekiah was the last king of David’s line to sit on that throne and that went back to when Jerusalem fell to the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC.
King Herod the Great had been put on the throne by Rome and his lineage was not through David. The King Herod who sat on the throne at the time when Jesus was teaching and healing was one of the sons of Herod the Great. Jerusalem was desolate!
Jacob Israel gave a blessing to his twelve sons. His blessing on his son Judah foretold of Messiah on Israel’s throne.
(NIV) Genesis 49:10 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he come to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.”
Jesus lament over Jerusalem was filled with sorrow and yearning for His people to know Him…and one day the nation of Israel will say to King Jesus:
(NASB) Luke 13:35b “BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!”
Jesus’ words are words of prophecy…and will one day be fulfilled. He will be recognized as the Anointed One of God, Redeemer and LORD by all Israel!
Redeemer means one who buys back.
(NIV) Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
The living God of the Prophets tells the Jewish people Who their Redeemer is:
(NASB) Isaiah 41:14 “…and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.”
God does not change – He is the same in ages past as He is today and He will be the same in all of the tomorrows to come!
When Israel’s King comes – He will be recognized, yielded to and worshiped by God’s beloved, chosen people – the Jewish nation – they will then have God’s chosen King on David’s throne. That King will be Messiah Jesus!
His lineage and right to that throne is found in Matthew 1 and Luke 3.
God’s Enduring Knowledge reveals His enduring love for His people!
And those who are not of Jewish lineage? We are included by faith in Jesus Christ!
