The following scenario is a possibility:
Martha was determined to be an excellent hostess.  She was distracted to the point of putting the emphasis on the meal preparation.  Worry!  Botheration!  Vexation!  And who was she vexed with?  Her sister!  Where was she?  Oh yes, sitting in the other room and listening to Jesus.  Well!  Mary was ignoring the banging of pots and pans and the not so subtle mutterings of Martha.

Martha had no other recourse…she would just have to go to Jesus and tell Him to get her sister into the kitchen!  “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?  Then tell her to help me.”  (Luke 10:40)

How did Jesus respond to this frustrated hostess?
(NASB) Luke 10:41-42 “But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things;
42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.’”

What loving re-direction Jesus gave to Martha.  Martha’s wrong attitude was dealt with by Jesus.  Her focus was on – herself.
Mary’s focus – was on Jesus and His words.
[Martha will become an astounding example to follow later in Jesus’ ministry.]

Where is your focus – on yourself much of the time or on the Lord Jesus and the Holy Bible?

I believe that Jesus was filled with love and compassion for Martha.  He loved this family.  Mary was commended for her choices and Martha?  She was lovingly corrected.
When you “see” the need to correct another – with what attitude do you correct them?

Too many times, harsh condemnation and pointed criticism is dealt as the way of handling a vexation.  And with that type of “correction” hurtful words may lead to the death of a friendship.

Jesus knows our frustrations.  He also knows what it takes to lead fruit-filled lives.
From this particular story of Martha and Mary, who are you most often like?
