Followers of Messiah Jesus have the assurance that God’s words of prophecy will be fulfilled.  How can there be such assurance?  Because the prophecies in the Old Testament of Messiah’s first coming were all fulfilled…not just one or two, but all of them.

Psalm 2 is a prophecy of the coming of Messiah as King over all the earth.  What does God’s word tell us will be the thought processes of the nations before He comes?
(NIV) Psalm 2:1-3 “WHY DO the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
2The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against His Anointed One (Messiah).
3‘Let us break their chains, they say,
and throw off their fetters.’”

And what of the Lord God Almighty?  How does He view all the nations getting together and conspiring to overthrow Him?
(NASB) Psalm 2:4-6 “He who sits in the heavens laughs,
The Lord scoffs at them.
5 Then He will speak to them in His anger
And terrify them in His fury, saying,
6 But as for Me, I have installed My King
Upon Zion, My holy mountain.’”

The Son of God, Messiah and King tells what He has heard from the Lord God Almighty:
(NASB) Psalm 2:7-9 “I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance,
And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron,
You shall shatter them like earthenware.’”

Did you notice the authority and power given to the coming King by God Himself?

Now there is a warning given to the leaders of the nations:
(NASB) Psalm 2:10-12 “Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;
Take warning, O judges of the earth.
11 Worship the LORD with reverence
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become
angry, and you perish in the way,
For His wrath may soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”

Psalm 2 ends with a promised blessing for those who take refuge in Jesus, the King!
