Jesus re-directed His twelve disciples thinking about what He would do while He was here.  They knew He was Messiah, the Anointed One of God.  But what He then told them was beyond what they had thought about Messiah.

(NASB) Luke 9:22 “…‘The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”

Jesus warned His twelve chosen disciples of the reality of His coming suffering and the reality of His coming death.
Jesus promised His twelve men the hope of life!  On the third day after His death, He would be raised to physical life.

Step by step Jesus was leading His disciples to the reality of His cross and death.
Step by step Jesus was leading his men to the reality of His resurrection.
Step by step Jesus was going to Jerusalem to fulfill God’s will for Him and to fulfill prophecy.

(Psalm 22 foretells of His crucifixion before that torturous death was ever devised; Isaiah 53 foretells of His suffering as the Savior of the world.)
