“Who do people say that I am?”
(NASB) Luke 9:18 “And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, ‘Who do the people say that I am?’”
The disciples answered: John the Baptist, others say You are Elijah, and others say that You are one of the prophets of the past, risen from the dead. (paraphrased: Luke 9:19)
Who do people today say that Jesus is?
Many say that Jesus was a “good man”. Others believe that He was a prophet. Then there are those who say, He is my Savior, my Master, my King, the expected Messiah, the Anointed One of God.
What I think about who Jesus is does not depend on what others think about Him. Your understanding and mine should depend on what God says about Jesus in His Holy word, the Bible.
What are some things we can know which God the Father said about Jesus?
At the Baptism of Jesus
(NASB) Luke 3:21-22 “Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, ‘You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
At the Transfiguration of Jesus
(NASB) Matthew 17:1-5 “SIX DAYS later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.
3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
4 Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, ‘This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!’”
