Fear or Faith?
Jesus and His disciples were in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. As Jesus was sleeping a storm came up, a “fierce gale of wind” swept over the water and the boat became swamped with the wind-driven waves. There were at least four fishermen on board that boat and they knew they were in danger. Jesus was awakened by the fear-filled disciples saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” (Luke 8:23-24)
The fear, the very real fear of drowning due to the powerful storm, apparently overwhelmed these men. Their skills at navigation were no match for nature’s power.
When Jesus awoke, He rebuked the wind and the “surging waves”, and the wind and water became calm. (Luke 8:24)
Jesus woke up. Jesus got up. Jesus spoke up. And the situation changed for these men in the boat. (What happened at that moment would have impacted anyone else who was out on that lake at that time…when you and I are blessed with changed circumstances through God’s intervention, others are also blessed!)
Jesus asked a simple question of His disciples and I believe He also asks us the same question: “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25)
The LORD uses our circumstances to grow our faith in Him and His power. Our faith is to be in Jesus – no matter what our circumstances are. We are to call out to Him for help without being filled with fear or panic.
What causes you to fear? What causes you to panic? Perhaps Jesus would ask you this question: “Where is your faith?”
What is faith? The LORD has defined faith in Hebrews 11:1 “NOW FAITH is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (NIV)
The disciples were amazed at the power of Jesus to speak and the wind and the waves obeyed His voice of rebuke. (Luke 8:25)
When Jesus and His power have intervened for you, are you amazed at what He has done for you?
Where is your faith in times of fear?
What is in control of your mind, your emotions and/or your will?
