How Jesus Chose His Twelve Disciples
Jesus prayed to God, alone on a mountain, all through the night. (Luke 6:12)
We aren’t told how Jesus prayed. We do see the results of His prayer. He chose twelve specific men from those who were following Him. Men He carefully, prayerfully chose.
These men would be used by God in the early church as leaders, preachers, writers of some of the Gospels and letters in the New Testament. One man would fulfill prophecy by betraying Jesus, Messiah. [Traitors do not value lives as much as they do their purposes and motives…life is expendable in order to achieve their goals.]
Who were these twelve men?
(NASB) Luke 6:14-16 “Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew (Nathanael);
15 and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;
16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.”
Twelve men, some were fishermen, one was a former tax collector, one was a zealot who wanted Israel freed from Roman rule, there was a doubter, as well as an intellectual, and others from various walks of life…then there was the traitor…and he is always listed last and identified as the traitor in Scripture.
Jesus had come to fulfill Scripture…all of the prophecies…not just the ones which were comfortable or safe.
Do you do that with Scripture, picking and choosing what is comfortable to your perceptions of God and His words?
Jesus chose with great deliberation in order to do His Father’s will…all of God’s will.
How do you make decisions?
Do you base it on God and His words? Do you pray before the decision is made? Do you ask God to bless your decision without considering if it is His way for you?
