Red Letter Day

Attribute/Name of God ~ Name

  Many people know the first part of the third commandment:

(NASB) Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…” but are you aware of the second part?  “…for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”  How do you speak the name of the LORD God?  Is it with the greatest respect, honor and worship?  His name reveals His character, His very nature.

  To think about the LORD (Jehovah, YHWH), the Master Whom we are to follow with obedience…is to be in awe and speak His name with the greatest respect:
(NASB) Psalm 8:1 “O LORD, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth…”

(NASB) Isaiah 42:8 “I am the LORD, that is My name;
I will not give My glory to another,
Nor My praise to graven images.”

The LORD alone is God, He alone is to be worshiped and spoken of with reverence.

(NASB) Matthew 6:9 “Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father who is in heaven,Hallowed be Your name.”

We are to turn from unbelief to faith in the power of the name of Jesus Christ:

(NASB) Acts 2:38 “Peter said to them, ‘Repent and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

(NASB) Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

How do you speak God’s name?
When you say the name of the LORD God is it with respect, honor and praise?

(NIV) Psalm 8:1 “O LORD, our Lord,
How majestic is your name in all the earth!…”
